Another of Lavigne’s Many “Hats”

Margie Bird-Buendia | March 18, 2005

Pete Lavigne, founder and president of RFA, wears many hats - including a photographer's hat (whatever that may look like!) He has recently begun offering his photographs for sale.

In November 2004, at the Brooklyn-Sellwood Art Walk here in Portland, the RFA office was transformed into a gallery for the weekend, exhibiting and offering for sale some of Pete's finest photographs. Shots taken in Alaska, Utah, Bolivia, Pennsylvania, and Arizona were among the selections.

Pete is an environmental attorney, educator, writer and activist. But his favorite avocation is photography. He started shooting pictures as a young teenager, exploring the roads, streams, and mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont by foot and bicycle. Growing up in a culture of hunters and fishers, he always carried a camera along with the requisite rifle or fishing rod. Easily distracted after "catching a few brook trout or mostly scaring deer," he found himself increasingly focusing on landscape photography and close-up abstracts of nature.

His first camera was his father's Kodak Retina IIa Rangefinder. Pete describes it as "still a great camera with an excellent lens and indestructible construction." His first published pictures were shot on Kodachrome slides using that camera while he was in high school.

Many scenic framed and unframed photos are available for purchase in the RFA office, and we hope to find other outlets for the sale of Pete's work.

Explore Our Watersheds

Copper River

Copper River

The Copper River Delta has the largest concentration of nesting shorebirds in North America, is an important nursery for prized salmon and other fisheries, and is a relatively unspoiled wilderness area with keystone predators including wolves and grizzlies.

Columbia River

Columbia River

The Columbia River watershed is a critical link in the mega-linkages of the Pacific flyway and predator migration corridor. It is the nerve center for salmon restoration, and one of the world's most highly manipulated great river systems.

Colorado River

Colorado River

The Colorado River system flows 1,450 miles through nine states and Mexico; the Grand Canyon was created by its waters. The aridity of most of this region has made its water into a valuable commodity, and the fragile desert, canyon, and delta ecosystems it supports have suffered as a result.

RFA Programs

Clean Water, Biodiversity, and Environmental Justice Initiative

Clean Water, Biodiversity, and Environmental Justice Initiative

This initiative links RFA's policies of supporting indigenous peoples, drumming home the common sense linkages between clean healthy water for human use, strong biodiverse and healthy ecosystems, and environmental justice for indigenous peoples and economically disadvantaged people throughout the Americas. Continue reading below for more about this initiative, or go to Global Water Policy Initiative to learn about RFA's other main initiative.

Global Water Policy Initiative

Global Water Policy Initiative

This initiative works at the heart of water policy issues, especially the global debate on the privatization of fresh water resources and growing water supply controversies throughout the United States and the hemisphere. We believe that all children and all people deserve clean water, and that access to a subsistence level of water is a basic human obligation.
